More and more businesses are
expanding sales on the Internet. Millions of people are using auction websites
to
buy things online so people are becoming more accustomed to online purchases.
In 2007 web based sales were up over 20% from 2006. In other words, millions
of new people bought products online this past year. Bottom line: if you
aren't selling online you are missing the boat!
The quick and dirty way to handle secure orders online is through PayPal's
Pro shopping cart service. Your orders through their secure shopping cart
are 100% guaranteed
to be delivered directly to your accounts fast and efficiently. The only
downfall is PayPal charges 2.9% of the final sales price (not including S/H). For most small
business I recommend PayPal because there is no initial cost to have an
account and the 29% is the only charge. Whereas the cost of setting up
secure payment gateways, secure web hosting and a merchant account can be
quite expensive. We charge $90/yr for a Payment Gateway setup on our hosting
servers and an account with Authorize.Net's merchant services will cost
roughly $25/mo to process credit cards online.
If your business requires a
custom shopping cart aside from PayPal you will need a business merchant
account through a bank or an online payment center like Authorize.Net or
VeriSign. Both can be as much as $30/mo just for an account, not to mention
a percentage will be taken from the total sales price. Different banks offer merchant accounts that are compatible for the
web. In order to fully design a shopping cart you must provide all product
information including product ID numbers, prices, shipping costs, and item
descriptions. When the merchant account is setup you have to use the service
of an online payment gateway company to make sure your orders are 100%
safe and secure. These gateway companies require money for their service just
like PayPal does. Different companies charge fees in several ways. Some take a
monthly fee where others may take a small percentage out of each transaction
total. As you can see the live shopping cart can certainly cost much more than
using PayPal.
